sendmail_logoSendmail today announced that their Sentrion Virtual Message Processor (MPV) has passed VMware’s evaluation and is now ‘VMware Ready’.

For those of you not familiar with Sentrion MP and MPV, it is a commercial version of the popular open source Message Transfer Agent (MTA), Sendmail. Sentrion MPV is a virtualized version of Sentrion MP, which has been around for quite some time. Since Sentrion MP is a hardware appliance, adding a virtualized appliance makes a whole lot of sense.

Thunderbird Logo01.net today reported (French | Google Translate) that two governmental institutes that recently merged will be moving to a unified Open Source-based solution. The institutes is the General Tax Directorate (DGI) and the Directorate General of Public Accountancy (DGCP) merged to create the General Directorate of Public Finance (DGFiP).

DGI with 80,000 users previously used Lotus Notes, while DGCP with 50,000 users was using Microsoft Outlook (presumably with Exchange, but the article does not reveal this). On the desktop-side, this new solution will be using Mozilla Thunderbird for email with the Lightening calendar extension.

It might also be worth mentioning that this is not the first time a French government switches over to Thunderbird. The Department of Defence for instance, have already switched over 70,000 users over to Thunderbird.

GoogleApps

For years, the de facto standards for e-mail, communication, and document creation within office environments have been Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Office, and (in recent years) Sharepoint. Google has, since February 2006, been lightly treading into the territory of commercial and business communication and, with the Google Docs portion of Google Apps. However, when Google made the announcement on October 18, 2009 that it would be releasing Google Apps from beta, the world of office software and communication trembled.

Is Google Applications going to be an industry mover and shaker, as many people have predicted? Or will it be a mere nuisance for Microsoft?

AtMail 6.0.11 Released

atmail_logoJust a mere 9 days after releasing 6.0.10, AtMail today announced 6.0.11. While I’m all for a short release cycle, this is almost too short, as it might create a create a too big burden for the sysadmins. For rigorous QA practices, 9 days (7 work days) is barely enough for validating the previous release and deploy it to the production servers.

Yet, the update is not insignificant, and includes quite a few nice improvements, such as better UTF8 support in folders for the webmail.

The City of Los Angles Ditches Novell, Goes Google Apps

hollywoodThe City Council of Los Angeles today voted unanimously to switch from Novell GroupWise over to Google Apps. This is a $7.25 million dollar contract that will span over 5 years and include 30,000 users. The migration to the new system is planned to start next June with a limited pilot.

While this might not be the biggest contract Google have landed, it is still a major break. If the city of Los Angeles puts their seal of approval on Google Apps, many other cities are likely to follow suit. Another reason why this is important is because it includes branches of the city, such as the law enforcement. If these branches approve the security of the new system, it will significantly boost the credibility of Google Apps.

yahoo_logoYesterday Yahoo shut down the legendary internet service GeoCities, which they bought back in 1999 for $3.57 billion in stock. While this does not appear to have anything in common with Yahoo Mail, it seems like the shutdown of GoeCities might have caused an outage for Yahoo Mail.

Andrew Molyneux, Program Manager at Yahoo Mail wrote on YMail Blog that “[a] small fraction of Yahoo! Mail users may have experienced intermittent email issues earlier today, October 26, but the problem has now been resolved.”

Microsoft to open up the PST-file format

The PST-format is used by Outlook

Paul Lorimer, Group Manager for Microsoft Office Interoperability today announced in a blog-post that Microsoft is planning to open up the PST file format. The PST format is used when Microsoft Outlook stores data locally.

Many Outlook users are using PST-files to make backups of their data. However, as it is a proprietary format, the data cannot easily be imported into any other application. While there are projects dedicated to reverse-engineering the format (such as libpff), open documentation would be welcomed by developers world wide.

Once Microsoft provide the community with this documentation, we will most likely see a lot of applications taking advantage of this. As PST-files are notorious for getting corrupted as they grow in size, 3rd-party repair tools are likely to become a lot more effective (and free). In addition to repair tools, we are also likely to see native PST import in desktop applications such as Mozilla Thunderbird and Apple Mail, as well as in various cloud based solutions, such as Google Apps.

Google Wave, Zenbe Shareflow, EtherPad and Scribblar: Fight!

gwave_logoTouted by many as the next step in the evolution of email, Google Wave, currently still in beta testing, is a real-time multi-user communication and collaboration tool that has taken the tech industry by storm.  It was only moments after the tech industry received their first peek at Wave back in late May that the hype over Google’s latest innovation began to spread. Over the past few months it has only grown: as I write this, coveted Google Wave invitations (sent only to 100,000 developers, who were then given the option to invite 5 friends each) are being sold on eBay and Craigslist.org. “WaveInvite” is currently a trending topic on Twitter and technology news sites are coming out with early reviews nearly once per hour.

But a fact of which many people might not be aware is that online communication and collaboration tools have been around for the better part of a decade. A quick search turned up literally dozens of potential Wave competitors, so why the buzz? Does it really do a better job or is it just because it’s being pushed by Google that it’s garnering so much attention? Read on for the answers to these questions and an introduction to a few collaboration tools that you can use, right now, and without needing one of Google’s golden tickets.
