Microsoft today announced that their senior management have signed off on the final code for Exchange 2010. The product will now be shipped off to early adopters and manufacturers.
One of the most interesting features in the new release is the introduction of a hybrid mode, which allows a deployment to use both Microsoft based and local hosting for their Exchange solution. In other words, this will allow a company to integrate Microsoft Exchange Online with their on-premise setup.
Other new features in Exchange 2010 includes built-in archiving, improved High Availability (HA) and text-preview of voice mail (similar to what you’ll find on the iPhone and in Google Voice). Also worth noting is that the new release is 64-bit only.
A good thing with the new release is that Microsoft is slowly starting to realize that Internet Explorer is not the only browser on the market. In the release notes we can read:
“Offer your users a premium Outlook experience across the desktop, Web, and mobile devices, including OWA support for browsers like Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox”
There are still no details on when Exchange 2010 will be available for the general public.
