Do you like the look and feel of Gmail, but are unhappy with Google’s view on privacy? If so, you might want to take a closer look at MiniG.
MiniG is an open sourced webmail client that is very similar to Gmail. While it’s not as polished at Gmail yet, it definitely has potentials. I stumbled across MiniG while looking into the collaboration software OBM, in which MiniG is the email component.
Similar to OBM, MiniG suffers from two problems:
- It’s default language is French, and it’s not fully translated (…it takes a bunch of french or possibly german developers to not make the default language English).
- Similar to many other early-stage open source projects, it’s poorly documented.
Yet, with these shortcomings in mind, it’s still a nice piece of software. At this point, there are only really two decent open source webmail clients: Squirrelmail and Roundcube. Some more competition wouldn’t hurt.

Only really two decent open source webmail clients?
What about Horde/IMP (http://www.horde.org) and OpenWebMail (http:/openwebmail.acatysmoof.com)?
Bburg,
Wouldn’t really agree with you there. OpenWebMail makes even Squirrelmail look modern (which in turn looks like it was developed in the 80s). As far as Horde/IMP goes — it has a pretty outdated look and feel to it too.
I mean, seriously where are all the decent open source webmails? Perhaps I’m wrong, but the only decent attempts to make a modern open source webmail I’m aware of are Roundcube and MiniG.
