Great new Gmail Labs feature: Mark unread from here

gmail-labsToday the Gmail blog posted an article about a new Labs add-on named ‘Mark Unread From Here.’ This add-on is a great extension to Gmail’s famous thread view.

Imagine the following scenario: you get into the office in the morning and open up your mailbox. You find a thread with 15 emails that have piled up over night from people in other timezones. You start reading through the messages but only have time to read the first three messages. By default, Gmail would mark the entire thread as read, even though you only read the first three messages. This is obviously not a great behavior.

threadsy_logoMy personal favorite when it comes to personal communication aggregation, threadsy, today announced support for Apple’s Mobile Me and Google Chrome for Mac (the web browser) as well as a few behind-the-scenes updates.

While adding Mobile Me support might not be very significant, as it uses regular IMAP. My guess is that the update simply maps email addresses ending with me.com/mac.com to the IMAP server mail.me.com

Google Apps goes live for the city of Los Angeles today

GoogleAppsToday is a big day for both Google and the City of Los Angeles, as the city officially pulled the plug on their old email with 34,000 users.

We covered the deal back in October when it was first announced. The reason why the deal is important is primarily because it is likely to lead to many similar deals when cities around the U.S. are looking to cut costs and move to the cloud.

While it is a big day for Google, it’s a major loss for both Microsoft and Novell, as Microsoft was Google’s closest competitor in this deal, and Novell since they powered the city of LA’s old system.

To spread the ‘success story’ even before it started, Google have already produced a video demonstrating the ‘successful switch to Google Apps’. Time will tell if the switch will be a success or failure.

Video after the jump.

French military turns Thunderbird into Trustedbird

Trustedbird-logoA while back we reported that certain branches of the French government were switching their desktop email clients to Thunderbird.

One of these branches who switched to Thunderbird was the French military. However, in order for Thunderbird to fit their particular requirements, quite a few modifications were required.

Thanks to the openness of Thunderbird, the French military were able to develop extensions to address some of their needs and modified the source code to address core changes. But they didn’t stop there. Instead of just keeping their changes to themselves, they open sourced them. Then, together with Mozilla they bundled the add-ons with a Thunderbird and created their own fork, named Trustedbird. Kudos to the French military!

Hushmail: Top-Notch Security But Not Much Else

hushmail_logoEmail is not the secure communication medium that most people take it for. Even if you’re using HTTPS or SSL to access your email account, after your message leaves your mail server it travels across the internet as relatively plain text until it reaches the intended recipient. During that journey, your message can be read or tampered with by cyber-criminals, government agencies, your ISP, unscrupulous network administrators, or anybody with some network knowledge and packet-sniffing software. Think of it more as sending a postcard through the mail, rather than a sealed envelope.

Atmail LogoAtMail have just released version 6.1.1 (both webmail and the server edition). One of the coolest new features in this release is that it can be easily installed on Snow Leopard Server to replace Squirrelmail, which
comes bundled with Snow Leopard. In addition to replacing the webmail component, it also integrates with the existing CalDAV server.

If you haven’t tried AtMail, I recommend that you take a look at their online demo. In my opinion, it’s one of the best stand-alone webmails on the market.

Just a few days after 2.6 was made available in the iTunes Store, 2.7 becomes available. The update is pretty minor, but includes a few important bug fixes. Perhaps the most noticable difference is that the icon is back to being blue, from being red in 2.6.

Here’s the list of fixes:

Now you can delete email accounts
Crashes when you clicked “Clear Search History” or “Clear Attachment Cache”
Status wouldn’t correctly update remaining time estimate

obm_logoDo you like the look and feel of Gmail, but are unhappy with Google’s view on privacy? If so, you might want to take a closer look at MiniG.

MiniG is an open sourced webmail client that is very similar to Gmail. While it’s not as polished at Gmail yet, it definitely has potentials. I stumbled across MiniG while looking into the collaboration software OBM, in which MiniG is the email component.
