Atmail 6.1.3 is out. Now supports LDAP and Active Directory

Atmail 6.1.3 was announced just a few hours ago. While you might wonder why we report so much about every release of Atmail. The reason is simple, Atmail is one of the most innovative email solutions on the market. Contrary to their larger competitors such as Exchange and Zimbra, Atmail a big bloatware that requires 4GB or RAM to handle 20 users. That is one of the main reason’s why I like Atmail.

As Atmail keeps adding new features, I really hope that they won’t fall in the bloatware-trap and add leave the light and minimalistic path they’re currently on.

Email Marketing Pt 2: MailChimp, ConstantContact, EmailBrain, LetterPop Reviews

Email marketing on targetIn part one, I discussed what email marketing can do for you, the types of email marketing, differences between opt-in and opt-out lists, and a few ways to build your own opt-in list. In part two, I’ll be giving a few reason why you should choose as 3rd party email marketing website instead of mass-mailing yourself and then I’ll be reviewing some of the more popular email marketing websites out there.

Why Choose a Third-Party Email Marketing Solution

It may seem like a good idea to simply email your newsletter to your contact list yourself using your own email client, but there are a number of drawbacks to this approach.

First, while programs like Outlook and Thunderbird may not limit how many messages can be sent per day, most internet service providers do. Some ISPs limit customers to as few as 1000 unique recipients per day and webmail providers can be even stricter, with some only allowing 25 unique recipients per day. When using a third-party email marketing website, you’re only limited by your budget.

Making Facebook’s messaging system IMAP compatible

imapbookI’m actually surprised nobody has posted anything about this online, but it’s more or less possible to write an IMAP proxy for Facebook using their API. Sure, you could not write a full-fledge IMAP implementation, but you could get it to perform the most basic tasks, like reading messages (and therefore also store them locally).

I got the idea of making an IMAP proxy (or bridge, parser or whatever you want to call it) back in in August when Facebook announced new API calls to access the mailbox. Upon reading them, I realized that it could be used for a lot new things, such as this. Since then, I’ve been waiting for someone take on the challenge. I’ve been keeping an eye open for a projects in this area, but haven’t seen any. Therefore, I thought I might at least raise some interest and perhaps someone will take on the challenge.

Pegasus MailFor those who have been using email since the dawn of time, Pegasus Mail is a well known name. For those of you who started out reading your first email in Outlook, chances are you have no clue what Pegasus Mail is.

Before I dive into what the new release entails, let’s just give those of you who are not familiar with Pegasus Mail a quick introduction. The first release of Pegasus Mail was launched back in the ’90s and was initially developed for Novell NetWare (a cut-down version of Pegasus Mail called FirstMail came bundled NetWare). Later on, support for MS DOS and Macintosh, and even later, Windows was added (Wikipedia).

Email Marketing Part 1: An Introduction

Chris Hoke

Email marketing is a type of direct marketing that aims to reach potential or current customers through the use of electronic mail. Unlike mass media marketing, email marketing sends promotional messages directly to targeted users. Email marketing, when used correctly, can encourage brand loyalty, increase overall customer satisfaction and, most importantly, increase sales.

There are many advantages to using email marketing over other marketing and advertising methods, most of which have to do with the nature of email and how people tend to use their email accounts. One such advantage is the fact that sending an email message costs nothing; the relatively small cost of email marketing is incurred by using websites that help manage your contact lists, provide message templates, and send the messages for you.

IBM LogoToday eWeek reported that Panasonic is switching 150,000 users away from Microsoft’s Exchange to IBM’s LotusLive.

The announcement came in a timely fashion, just as Lotusphere 2010 is about to open it’s doors. Coincidence? I think not. It sounds like a well planned marketing move.

Gmail is now more secure.

Yesterday Google made a pretty small announcement in regards to a big change (at least from my point-of-view).

The news is that they are going from non-SSL to SSL as the default option in Gmail. For those non-techies reading this, this means that instead of sending the traffic from Google’s servers to your local computer in an unencrypted form, which is vulnerable for other people to eavesdrop on your communication (eg. reading your emails as you are reading them), they are now encrypting the traffic. By doing this, it becomes fairly difficult for someone to eavesdrop on your communication (although not impossible).

For the security conscious people out there, this option have been available for quite some time (since 2008 to be precise), but it has not been enabled by default.

It’s official: VMware+Zimbra=True

It’s been rumored for quite some time, but now it’s finally official: VMware have acquired Zimbra from Yahoo.

I’m actually very excited over this, and I think it can turn out to be a great combination. Since Yahoo hasn’t paid much attention to Zimbra at all, I hope the new owners will. As I wrote back when the deal was still just a rumor, with VMware’s competence in virtualization and Zimbra’s collaboration software, this could turn out to be one heck of a virtual appliance.

Finally two-way email communication with Facebook

facebook-logoI know a lot of people are frustrated with Facebook’s lock-in when it comes to communication. Until today, all communication by email with Facebook was one-way. When someone post a message your wall or comment on a post, you receive an email notification (which can be configured).

That all changed today when Facebook announced you can reply to these notification messages and post a comment back.

Colleges Consider Eliminating Campus Email

Chris Hoke

With many colleges and universities running short on money, administrators are trying to cut costs wherever possible. It seems that one trend that a large number of schools are aiming to follow is the elimination of campus email accounts. A study done by the education-technology group EDUCAUSE shows that 10% of schools are looking at cutting campus email accounts.

According to school administration, the current campus email system is rendered useless because most incoming freshman already have established email accounts. While this may be true, the decision to cut the program runs counter to the wishes of the majority of the student body. In an ECAR study of 27,846 freshmen and seniors from 103 institutions, 82.5 percent of the students reported that a campus e-mail account was their preferred choice of communication. This fact alone should be enough to encourage schools to save the campus email system, but there are still more reasons that the schools may not have considered.
