Email Marketing Part 1: An Introduction

Email marketing is a type of direct marketing that aims to reach potential or current customers through the use of electronic mail. Unlike mass media marketing, email marketing sends promotional messages directly to targeted users. Email marketing, when used correctly, can encourage brand loyalty, increase overall customer satisfaction and, most importantly, increase sales.

There are many advantages to using email marketing over other marketing and advertising methods, most of which have to do with the nature of email and how people tend to use their email accounts. One such advantage is the fact that sending an email message costs nothing; the relatively small cost of email marketing is incurred by using websites that help manage your contact lists, provide message templates, and send the messages for you.

IBM LogoToday eWeek reported that Panasonic is switching 150,000 users away from Microsoft’s Exchange to IBM’s LotusLive.

The announcement came in a timely fashion, just as Lotusphere 2010 is about to open it’s doors. Coincidence? I think not. It sounds like a well planned marketing move.

Gmail is now more secure.

Yesterday Google made a pretty small announcement in regards to a big change (at least from my point-of-view).

The news is that they are going from non-SSL to SSL as the default option in Gmail. For those non-techies reading this, this means that instead of sending the traffic from Google’s servers to your local computer in an unencrypted form, which is vulnerable for other people to eavesdrop on your communication (eg. reading your emails as you are reading them), they are now encrypting the traffic. By doing this, it becomes fairly difficult for someone to eavesdrop on your communication (although not impossible).

For the security conscious people out there, this option have been available for quite some time (since 2008 to be precise), but it has not been enabled by default.

It’s official: VMware+Zimbra=True

It’s been rumored for quite some time, but now it’s finally official: VMware have acquired Zimbra from Yahoo.

I’m actually very excited over this, and I think it can turn out to be a great combination. Since Yahoo hasn’t paid much attention to Zimbra at all, I hope the new owners will. As I wrote back when the deal was still just a rumor, with VMware’s competence in virtualization and Zimbra’s collaboration software, this could turn out to be one heck of a virtual appliance.

facebook-logoI know a lot of people are frustrated with Facebook’s lock-in when it comes to communication. Until today, all communication by email with Facebook was one-way. When someone post a message your wall or comment on a post, you receive an email notification (which can be configured).

That all changed today when Facebook announced you can reply to these notification messages and post a comment back.

Colleges Consider Eliminating Campus Email

With many colleges and universities running short on money, administrators are trying to cut costs wherever possible. It seems that one trend that a large number of schools are aiming to follow is the elimination of campus email accounts. A study done by the education-technology group EDUCAUSE shows that 10% of schools are looking at cutting campus email accounts.

According to school administration, the current campus email system is rendered useless because most incoming freshman already have established email accounts. While this may be true, the decision to cut the program runs counter to the wishes of the majority of the student body. In an ECAR study of 27,846 freshmen and seniors from 103 institutions, 82.5 percent of the students reported that a campus e-mail account was their preferred choice of communication. This fact alone should be enough to encourage schools to save the campus email system, but there are still more reasons that the schools may not have considered.

AtMail just posted two announcement on their blog. The first one is the release of AtMail version 6.1.2. The two most exciting changes in this release is the introduction of Subadmin dashboard, which allows users to get an overview of their account, as well as improved integration with ArchiveVault.

The second announcement was about ArchiveVault 1.3. However, details are few in the announcement. The only thing it states is that it includes ‘a user-interface overhaul, new Admin options, improved Lucene search index for data-mining, new API feature and integration with Atmail 6‘

VMware to acquire Zimbra from Yahoo?

It has been known for quite some time that Yahoo are trying to make bold changes internally. Products have been shut down (eg. Yahoo Live and Geocities) and it has been rumored that Zimbra has been up for sale for quite a few months by now.

If VMware ends up acquiring Zimbra it’s a very strange deal, but it might make sense. With VMware’s virtualization expertise, they might very well be able turn Zimbra into a powerful virtual appliance. That could work both sell it as a software appliance (just the virtual machine) as well as a hardware appliance (hardware). Combined with VMware’s virtualization product line, they can target everything from small business (VMware Server) to large enterprises (ESX). This could be a very serious threat to Microsoft Exchange.

The Peek email device: Why?

December 30th, 2009
Viktor Petersson

Peek LogoIf you have never heard about it, the Peek is very a simple device dedicated to one thing: email. It’s roughly the size of your average smartphone and comes with a color screen and a qwerty keyboard. That’s it. No fancy features, just basic email access in your pocket.

The Peek comes in two different versions: Peek Pronto and Peek Classic. The Pronto is priced at $59.95, and the Classic at $19.95. However, the phone is not very useful without a plan. The plans starts at (and you know what that really means…) $14.95 per month. For that price, you get unlimited email access nation wide (U.S.) from your Peek.

The problem is this: it doesn’t even beat your iPhone/BlackBerry on the one thing it was created for, namely email. This brings me to the big question: why would you ever get a Peek?

Cc:Betty Has Got It Where It Counts

Email has been around for a few decades and in the last decade it hasn’t changed very much from its original structure. The nature of email is that it’s a person-to-person communication, which serves most users just fine, except when trying to communicate between a group. Email messages pile up and it becomes difficult to figure out who communicated what message and when. In that case what you really need is more akin to a digital bulletin board or, as the tech industry has begun to call it within the last few years, a collaborative workspace.

Collaborative workspace enables many users to view, make changes, and add comments to a document, page, or idea. (Google Wave and Zenbe Shareflow are examples of collaborative workspace programs.) The problem with many of these programs is that they don’t integrate very smoothly with email, at least not yet. You’re still left with two inboxes to check and it necessitates that everyone in the group needs to agree to use the same program. Then all of the users needs to sign-up and learn how this new program works, which can be problematic.
