IBM LogoToday eWeek reported that Panasonic is switching 150,000 users away from Microsoft’s Exchange to IBM’s LotusLive.

The announcement came in a timely fashion, just as Lotusphere 2010 is about to open it’s doors. Coincidence? I think not. It sounds like a well planned marketing move.

Microsoft Repositions Itself Against Google

Gregory Minton

Microsoft_Online_ServicesUntil recently, a low-cost alternative to Microsoft Exchange Online has been Google Apps. Google charges $50/year per user for its Google Apps access, which has stood in sharp contrast to Microsoft’s price of $120/year per user. Businesses looking to save money have begun the exodus to Google Apps, which offers many of the networked calendar, e-mail and other such features that are used often in the office.

Now, in a clear move against Google, Microsoft has slashed its price in half to $60/year per user.

French Government Goes Open Source with Mozilla and OBM

Thunderbird Logo01.net today reported (French | Google Translate) that two governmental institutes that recently merged will be moving to a unified Open Source-based solution. The institutes is the General Tax Directorate (DGI) and the Directorate General of Public Accountancy (DGCP) merged to create the General Directorate of Public Finance (DGFiP).

DGI with 80,000 users previously used Lotus Notes, while DGCP with 50,000 users was using Microsoft Outlook (presumably with Exchange, but the article does not reveal this). On the desktop-side, this new solution will be using Mozilla Thunderbird for email with the Lightening calendar extension.

It might also be worth mentioning that this is not the first time a French government switches over to Thunderbird. The Department of Defence for instance, have already switched over 70,000 users over to Thunderbird.

Phishing attack targets Outlook Web Access

While this attack might not be very technical (we’ve seen these kinds of attacks for many years), I still think it is a brilliant attack. What makes the attack brilliant is that it does not use a generic fake page. WebSense Security Alert states that:

The malicious site is also very believable. The victim’s domain is used as a sub-domain to the site so that the attack site appears to be the victim’s actual OWA site. The victim’s domain name and email address are also used in a number of locations on the malicious site to make it that much more believable.

According to the above alert, the attack is fairly extensive with ’30,000 of these messages per hour’ and it is likely to slip through anti-virus filters.

With more companies making the switch from Desktop applications to web-based applications, I think we will see an increasing amount of attacks. Moreover, with simple techniques such as reading the identification string of the server (e.g. through IMAP), the attacker can customize the attack to suit the victims server. If it’s an Exchange server, the attacker can send the above page. If it’s a Zimbra server, the user can send a similar page, but based on the Zimbra design.

How to Recall an Email Using Outlook

It’s one of those things that’s probably happened to most people. You click the send button in your email client and then … oh no! … realise that the email is being sent to wrong person! You desperately scrabble to cancel the sending but … too slow … and that picture you meant to send to your girlfriend is now on its way to your boss. Oops!

As we covered in a recent article, something similar happened to an employee of the Rocky Mountain Bank in Wyoming (let’s call him “Bob”). It seems that poor old Bob was asked to send certain documents to a particular Gmail address, but actually sent them to a completely different Gmail address. Ouch! Upon realising his mistake, Bob sent another email to that address asking that the recipient delete the initial email unread and to contact the bank to discuss the situation. Alas, Bob – who was probably sweating profusely by this time – didn’t get a response (which is not particularly surprising – I think the majority of people would have assumed that Bob was a scammer/spammer/phisher!).

Exchange 2010Microsoft today announced that their senior management have signed off on the final code for Exchange 2010. The product will now be shipped off to early adopters and manufacturers.

One of the most interesting features in the new release is the introduction of a hybrid mode, which allows a deployment to use both Microsoft based and local hosting for their Exchange solution. In other words, this will allow a company to integrate Microsoft Exchange Online with their on-premise setup.

Other new features in Exchange 2010 includes built-in archiving, improved High Availability (HA) and text-preview of voice mail (similar to what you’ll find on the iPhone and in Google Voice). Also worth noting is that the new release is 64-bit only.

Will Dell become the next big SaaS player?

Dell and SaaSMost of us think of servers and cheap, plastic, laptops when we think of Dell. Perhaps we need to re-think this. Within a few years, Dell might be as synonymous with SaaS as Amazon and Salesforce.

Over the last year, Dell has been busy acquiring SaaS companies. One of the most interesting acquisitions is MessageOne, a company offering a diverse range of email services.
