emailThe research company RapLeaf recently published the 3rd article in their series where they’ve studied social media and email. Using a sample of 120,000 email users (AOL, Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo users), they studied the gender, online activity, friend counts and social network memberships. It’s a really interesting study, and I strongly suggest you go ahead and read the full reports, not just this summary.

A rather lame phishing attempt.

Yesterday we reported that Microsoft Live/Hotmail was exposed to an extensive phishing scheme. Apparently the attack was more extensive than this. BBC News reports that a second list with 20,000 accounts was published. Contrary to the first list, the second list included accounts from AOL, Comcast, Earthlink, Gmail and Hotmail. With that information, we can conclude that this is an industry-wide attack, rather than an attack on a particular provider.

Phishing attacks by themselves are nothing new, but this is probably one of the biggest attacks that I have ever heard of.

Windows LiveAccording to Neowin, there has been a major security breach over at Windows Live. Details are still scarce, but apparently a list of over 10,000 email accounts were posted over at Pastebin this past weekend. The list Neowin read listed account-names all starting with the letters A and B, which suggests that there might be additional lists. Neowin also points out that the leaked accounts seems to be valid and that most of them originate from Europe.

outlook2007_webOn 1st September 2009, Microsoft finally dumped the Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV) protocol that had previously enabled Hotmail users to access their email through Outlook Express, Outlook and Entourage. What this means is that people attempting to access their Hotmail account with one of these email clients after 1st September will be presented with an error message:

Hotmail – Sending reported error (0×800CCC33): “Access to the account was denied. Verify that your username and password are correct. The server responded ‘forbidden’.
