Microsoft_Online_ServicesUntil recently, a low-cost alternative to Microsoft Exchange Online has been Google Apps. Google charges $50/year per user for its Google Apps access, which has stood in sharp contrast to Microsoft’s price of $120/year per user. Businesses looking to save money have begun the exodus to Google Apps, which offers many of the networked calendar, e-mail and other such features that are used often in the office.

Now, in a clear move against Google, Microsoft has slashed its price in half to $60/year per user.

Microsoft to open up the PST-file format

The PST-format is used by Outlook

Paul Lorimer, Group Manager for Microsoft Office Interoperability today announced in a blog-post that Microsoft is planning to open up the PST file format. The PST format is used when Microsoft Outlook stores data locally.

Many Outlook users are using PST-files to make backups of their data. However, as it is a proprietary format, the data cannot easily be imported into any other application. While there are projects dedicated to reverse-engineering the format (such as libpff), open documentation would be welcomed by developers world wide.

Once Microsoft provide the community with this documentation, we will most likely see a lot of applications taking advantage of this. As PST-files are notorious for getting corrupted as they grow in size, 3rd-party repair tools are likely to become a lot more effective (and free). In addition to repair tools, we are also likely to see native PST import in desktop applications such as Mozilla Thunderbird and Apple Mail, as well as in various cloud based solutions, such as Google Apps.

Band AidWe reported the other day that Microsoft (or rather the subsidiary Danger) managed to lose all data for T-Mobile’s Sidekicks in a server failure. The Sidekicks rely heavily on these servers, as they store everything from contacts to calendar and photos there. Hence, the failure was a disaster for both T-Mobile and Microsoft/Danger.

Today in a rather surprising turn of events, Microsoft announced that they have managed to recover ‘most, if not all, customer data.’ In the press release Microsoft states that they will start the recovering shortly, starting with the contacts data.

Perhaps you’ve been out of touch with civilization this past weekend and missed the major failure that occurred over at Danger/Microsoft. To get you up to speed: the server(s) failed and no backups were available (i.e. the sysadmins over at Danger will probably be unemployed for life).

Windows LiveAccording to Neowin, there has been a major security breach over at Windows Live. Details are still scarce, but apparently a list of over 10,000 email accounts were posted over at Pastebin this past weekend. The list Neowin read listed account-names all starting with the letters A and B, which suggests that there might be additional lists. Neowin also points out that the leaked accounts seems to be valid and that most of them originate from Europe.
