reMail goes Open Source! What does it mean?

A few weeks back it was announced that reMail had been acquired by Google. We were somewhat surprised by the announcement. What does Google plan to do with reMail? Was it a pure talent acquisition? (Gabor Cselle, the founder of reMail, is an ex-Googler.)

Today an even more surprising announcement was made: reMail is going open source! I’m still not sure what this means. Are Google open sourcing reMail because they don’t care for it (they just wanted Gabor back), or is it part of a bigger strategy? Perhaps Google is planning to embed the technology behind reMail in Android. If so, it might make sense for them to first open source the technology.

This announcement leaves me with a lot of questions. Hopefully we will see the reMail technology built into an upcoming version of Android. I’m all for open source, but I’m just confused about Google’s strategy.

I’ve attached a video demo of reMail after the jump.

Just a few days after 2.6 was made available in the iTunes Store, 2.7 becomes available. The update is pretty minor, but includes a few important bug fixes. Perhaps the most noticable difference is that the icon is back to being blue, from being red in 2.6.

Here’s the list of fixes:

Now you can delete email accounts
Crashes when you clicked “Clear Search History” or “Clear Attachment Cache”
Status wouldn’t correctly update remaining time estimate

remail_logoAbout a month ago we reviewed a cool iPhone app called reMail. When we wrote the review we used version 2.5.

Now, a half month after being announced that they had submitted version 2.6 to the App Store, it’s has finally been approved and is available for download through iTunes.

I reached out to Gabor (the founder of reMail) to ask him about the new features in 2.6. Gabor told me that in addition to various bug-fixes, they’ve added push notification and improved the speed on person searches. Also, 2.6 is now free, and you can then use the new in-app feature that was introduced in iPhone OS 3.0 to upgrade to the premium features.

reMail Completes Mail On The iPhone

remail_logoThe iPhone was launched without the capability to search emails. It took until iPhone OS 3.0 for this feature to be introduced. Unfortunately, the search feature is still limited to the headers (i.e. to, from, subject etc). You are not able to search the body of the messages (full-text search). This is a quite severe limitation, in particular for mobile business users.

reMail is an iPhone app that solves this. If reMail sounds familiar, it’s probably because they’re a Y-Combinator start-up and that they’ve been featured on TechCrunch. In the article on TechCrunch, the reMail Beta was criticized due to privacy concerns, as the version reviewed actually stored and processed the messages on reMail’s servers. In recent versions, this is no longer the case (as TechCrunch also pointed out in a follow-up article). This is fortunate, because I’m not sure how comfortable I would have been with all my emails sent to their servers (even if they back then claimed the data was safely stored).
