It’s been rumored for quite some time, but now it’s finally official: VMware have acquired Zimbra from Yahoo.

I’m actually very excited over this, and I think it can turn out to be a great combination. Since Yahoo hasn’t paid much attention to Zimbra at all, I hope the new owners will. As I wrote back when the deal was still just a rumor, with VMware’s competence in virtualization and Zimbra’s collaboration software, this could turn out to be one heck of a virtual appliance.

It has been known for quite some time that Yahoo are trying to make bold changes internally. Products have been shut down (eg. Yahoo Live and Geocities) and it has been rumored that Zimbra has been up for sale for quite a few months by now.

With VMware’s virtualization expertise, they might very well be able turn Zimbra into a powerful virtual appliance. That could work both sell it as a software appliance (just the virtual machine) as well as a hardware appliance (hardware). Open-XchangeA few days ago we introduced a new section here at ESG named ‘downloads.’ At launch, we had already added two Virtual Appliances to this new section: Scalix and Zimbra. Today, we introduce another addition to the list: Open-Xchange.

Open-Xchange is a great piece of software. It offers a lot of features and has a snappy user interface. While it does not offer quite as many features as Zimbra, it is definitely more lightweight.

With this new addition, we have now covered the three most popular open collaboration software. If you have any feedback or would like us to add any other virtual appliances, please let us know.

sendmail_logoSendmail today announced that their Sentrion Virtual Message Processor (MPV) has passed VMware’s evaluation and is now ‘VMware Ready’.

For those of you not familiar with Sentrion MP and MPV, it is a commercial version of the popular open source Message Transfer Agent (MTA), Sendmail. Sentrion MPV is a virtualized version of Sentrion MP, which has been around for quite some time. Since Sentrion MP is a hardware appliance, adding a virtualized appliance makes a whole lot of sense.
