VMware to acquire Zimbra from Yahoo?

It has been known for quite some time that Yahoo are trying to make bold changes internally. Products have been shut down (eg. Yahoo Live and Geocities) and it has been rumored that Zimbra has been up for sale for quite a few months by now.

If VMware ends up acquiring Zimbra it’s a very strange deal, but it might make sense. With VMware’s virtualization expertise, they might very well be able turn Zimbra into a powerful virtual appliance. That could work both sell it as a software appliance (just the virtual machine) as well as a hardware appliance (hardware). Combined with VMware’s virtualization product line, they can target everything from small business (VMware Server) to large enterprises (ESX). This could be a very serious threat to Microsoft Exchange.

emailThe research company RapLeaf recently published the 3rd article in their series where they’ve studied social media and email. Using a sample of 120,000 email users (AOL, Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo users), they studied the gender, online activity, friend counts and social network memberships. It’s a really interesting study, and I strongly suggest you go ahead and read the full reports, not just this summary.

Part 1: Age and Gender

“Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo users tend to be younger while AOL users are slightly older. Hotmail’s audience tends to made up of more males, Gmail users tend to lean female, and AOL and Yahoo users are equally likely to be male and female.”

Yahoo_logoManaging contacts is a pain in the butt. This is particularly true if you use multiple web-based email accounts. Yesterday Yahoo announced the release of a new tool that at least makes contact consolidation easier. Based on technology from TrueSwitch (the company with the world’s ugliest website), Yahoo joins Gmail and countless others that use the same technology.

Contrary Gmail’s interface though, Yahoo’s tool is more geared towards consolidating multiple sources. The tool is very easy to use. Just select the account types you wish to transfer and the credentials. Once the consolidation is completed, the contacts will be accessible within your Yahoo Mail. The announcement also points out that you can use their built-in tool to get rid of duplicates.

email_lookup_1In part one, I wrote a brief introduction to email search, explained the difference between email search and reverse lookup, and mentioned some of the problems that you may encounter when starting your search. In this article, I’ll be listing a few top email search services, both free and premium, talking about email search directories, and warning against email lookup services that turn out to be scams.

Email lookup sites can be divided into three groups: free search services, premium email lookup services, and email directories. A wise area to start when you’re beginning your search is in the email directories.

yahoo_logoYesterday Yahoo shut down the legendary internet service GeoCities, which they bought back in 1999 for $3.57 billion in stock. While this does not appear to have anything in common with Yahoo Mail, it seems like the shutdown of GoeCities might have caused an outage for Yahoo Mail.

Andrew Molyneux, Program Manager at Yahoo Mail wrote on YMail Blog that “[a] small fraction of Yahoo! Mail users may have experienced intermittent email issues earlier today, October 26, but the problem has now been resolved.”

Yahoo! Mail re-invents e-mail attachments

Yahoo + Drop.ioIn a rather surprising move, Yahoo recently announced that they have upped the maximum attachment size to 100MB. That by itself might not be very exciting. I personally hate people who email large attachments since email was never intended as a file transfer method. That brings me to why Yahoo’s announcement is noteworthy.

Instead of simply increasing the allowed attachment size, Yahoo teamed up with drop.io. By integrating drop.io’s API into Yahoo Mail, we got a much more intelligent type of attachement system. When sending a message, a link to the attachment is sent instead of the actual attachment. That means a much leaner and happier mailbox.

Zimbra LogoToday Zimbra announced version 6.0 of their popular collaboration software. So what makes this update so amazing that they had to skip several numbers from version 5.4? Rumors are already flying that this is a publicity stunt during a potential sale of the company. Is there enough meat in this release? Lets take a look.
